At The Arc Community League’s Connections parent support group meeting on Aug. 12, the Chapter hosted Jesse Saperstein, autism advocate, motivational speaker, and author of “Atypical” Life with Asperger’s in 20 1/3 Chapters” and “Getting a Life with Asperger’s: Lessons Learned on the Bumpy Road to Adulthood.”
He spoke to parents, individuals, and guests about his life, his experiences with bullying as someone on the autism spectrum. Saperstein also shared a number of stories about his life growing up, college life, hiking the Appalachian Trail, writing two books, and his job experiences leading up to his current position as a Habilitation Liaison with The College Experience.
The College Experience is a two-year residential non-credit certificate program hosted by The College of Saint Rose in partnership with Living Resources. Through the program, students with intellectual disabilities can practice living independently, make friends, intern at area businesses, and become part of a diverse campus community. Launched in 2005, it remains just one of a handful of academic programs in the nation that serve the developmentally disabled population post high school graduation. The Trustees of the NYSARC, Inc. Trust have approved a remainder fund grant of $12,500 per chapter to provide recreational opportunities for people they support. Last year the Chapter received a similar grant from NYSARC Trust Services to (INCLUDE DESCRIPTION of activities/people benefiting)

use the funds in the same fashion this year. In addition, remainder fund grants totaling $ 2,302,500 were awarded to support NYSARC guardianship programs statewide. A total of $2,980,000 in remainder grants was awarded in 2016 to support recreation and guardianship statewide. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts that enable people with disabilities to remain in their home and community while retaining Medicaid services and other government benefits. The Trustees of the NYSARC, Inc. Trust have approved a remainder fund grant of $12,500 per Chapter for 2016 to provide recreational opportunities for people they support.  The ARC Community League Chapter used these funds to enhance the Chapter’s Supplemental Group Day Habilitation Program by offering activities that normally would not be available due to cost.  These additional, special activities were chosen to enhance social skills and expose people with developmental disabilities to the cultural world around them.  As part of person-centered planning, people served were involved in choosing these activities.

The ARC Community League is grateful to NYSARC Trust for making this possible.

In addition, the NYSARC Trust Remainder Fund grants totaling $ 1,466,000 were also awarded to support NYSARC guardianship programs statewide.  A total of $1,874,000 in remainder grants have been awarded in 2016 to support recreation and guardianship statewide.
